What Is Our Most Important Objective?

The race for the Democratic nomination is getting tense.  The continuity of the Democratic electorate may be starting to fray around the edges because our candidates are starting to attack their opponents directly while Trump is again doing his best to get Sanders supporters to believe their candidate is being discriminated against.  We, the supporters of those various candidates for the Democratic nomination, are thus being attempted to again join in the type of internal battles against the supporters of other candidates which proved so disruptive to our efforts in 2016.

This must not be allowed to happen again.  We, the Democrats and progressive independents must resist the temptation to again be involved in those self-defeating political fights within our own ranks.  All of us have a much more important goal, and that is removing the scourge that currently occupies the White House.  Regardless of which Democratic candidate is ahead on a given day, regardless how much our candidates continue to bash each other, we absolutely have to remain united behind our most important goal.  That is to ensure that our ultimate nominee has the truly united support necessary to ensure that Donald Trump does not have another four years to finish destroying our country.

We are a non-homogeneous coalition.  Some of us are moderates, some are more liberal while others are very progressive.  Unlike most of the Republicans we are of many different ethnicities backgrounds and cultures. We may have similar goals, but we often support very divergent paths to achieve them.

However, we are very much alike in what we are not.  Among other things, we don’t live just for ourselves and our families and our businesses – we care about the plight of others.  We don’t want anyone to be treated unfairly and subjected unfairly to the power of the government.  We don’t want an economy that that favors only the rich and makes everyone else poorer.  We don’t want to stand by and see anyone deprived of the health care they need.  We don’t believe anyone is above the law.  We don’t want to antagonize our allies around the world while embracing those who would do us harm.

Whenever we are tempted by internal or external circumstance to treat our fellow Democrats and independent progressives as our enemies instead of our indispensable allies we need to remember one thing:  Donald John Trump is the aggregation of everything we are not and everything we are fighting against.  Therefore fighting among ourselves totally counter productive to our goal of removing him from office following the 2020 elections.

Eventually one of our fine candidates will be chose as our nominee.  Once that happens, we must forget the primaries, and any convention fights if they occur, and give our total support to our nominee, whoever assumes that role. We can’t afford to repeat the that sad refrain “well I guess I will hold my nose and vote for (insert name)”.  We are among the most politically active and politically savvy.  If we want to achieve our most important objective we must be ALL IN!

We must willing support our candidate with our time, our financial contributions, and our hearts and souls.  We must implore our family members, our friends and others with whom we are in contact to join our cause and do everything in our power to make sure that Trump is unceremoniously thrown out of office along with retaining control of the House and winning the Senate.

We often say that any of the candidates for the Democratic nomination will a thousand times better than Trump.  Those must become more than mere words.  We must believe those words with our very being and act upon them.
