Let’s Be Clear – Trump Is Not the First Former US President to be Worthy of Criminal Inditement

Donald Trump may be the first former president to face a criminal indictment, but he is not the first former president to deserve to be indicted.  Richard Nixon, like Trump, while still President resorted to using criminal measures to stay in power.  The only difference between their situations is that Nixon was initially successful in his endeavor while Trump was not.

In an interview in 1989 Gerald explained that he pardoned Nixon because an indictment was inevitable, which would be followed by a trial and a conviction, which would be then followed by years of appeals.  He went on to say that he did not believe that his administration could effectively govern amide the resulting public upheaval.

Aside from both being Republicans, Nixon and Trump have much in common.  Both men had/have no regard for ethics.  Both incited political divisions among the people of this country to seize power in the first place.  Both drew up enemies lists with the intention of using government power to punish those who opposed them.  Both tried to play the martyrs while holding the most powerful office in the world and both had no qualms about doing whatever it was necessary to maintain their power.

Nixon only stepped down when patriotic Congressional Republicans demanded that he do so after being caught red-handed.  Unfortunately, today the vast majority of Republican leaders don’t have the guts necessary to turn their backs on the racists, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, and Islamaphobic bigots and other “deplorables” who make up a large portion of Trump’s base in order to call him to task.

  1. While there have been instances of illegal acts by elected officials throughout our nation’s history, they have never before been aided and abetted by a major political party.
The Republican Party is not only refusing to stop the actions of Trump, Jordan, Greene, Boebert, McConnell, and McCarthy ( I am sure I’m leaving out many other names as well) they are actively abetting them.

I think it only fair to note that the Democrats, ably placed to rise up and combat these undemocratic actions, are doing very little to do that. Perhaps fear of alienating the large donors is at the root of this abysmal failure to do their sworn duty?

Our democracy is imperiled as it has only on several rare occasions in the past; the Civil War of course, and the Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee red scare come immediately to mind , which was stopped in its tracks by the heroic efforts of Joseph Welch who was the defense attorney for the Army in those hearings “Have you no sense of decency, Senator McCarthy” was the turning point and spelled the end of McCarthysim.

Oh how we need him today. I cannot, in good faith, omit noting the heroic efforts of Margaret Chase Smith, alone among legislators who stood against McCarthy.

    C/mon Democrats , get a backbone.

  2. One of those items should read:

Continued rigging of 2002/2004 elections by Karl Rove and Mike Connell, by various methods, including computer/electronics.

    Recommended book:
    CODE RED
    by
    Jonathan Simon.

  3. That should read,
    INDICTMENT.
    (I can’t help it; I’m a retired English teacher).

The GOP is a crime syndicate:

    –Watergate
–October Surprise sabotage of 1980 Carter Prez campaign,
    NOW VERIFIED!
    –Iran-Contra
–Pardoning of Iran-Contra criminals (Oliver North, etc etc etc)
    –Stolen Prez election of 2000
–Continued rigging of 2002/2004 electionms bt Karl Rove and Mike Connell
–Organized use of WMD LIES to get us into Iraq war, 2002/3.
–Organized use of “Birther” lies to sabotage Obama administration.
–Obstruction of Dem judges by McConnell to enable packing of SCOTUS and other courts with extremist right-wingers.
–The countless lies and crimes of Trump.

There’s more of course, but those are the major ones.
