If We Had Had Anyone Else in the White House . . .

If for the last four years if we could have had a decent leader, any decent leader in the White House we would be so much better off because:

After a close election, for his/her political well being, any other president would have tried to appeal to the majority of Americans rather than catering only to the minority that elected him/her.

There would have been no blatant attempt by the president to cater to the racist, xenophobic, and homophobic prejudices for political gain.

We would be leading the world into an era of safe, renewable energy while strengthening our economy and serving as an example to other countries by reducing our carbon footprint in order to minimize our impact on global warming.

Our alliances around the world would still be strong and other countries would still trust us to keep the promises and agreements we have made. We would have joined with our allies to achieve our goals instead of trying to bully other countries into doing our bidding.

Putin’s dream of making Russia a great world power again would still be a pipe dream because we would have united with our allies to crush the Russian economy after they invaded the Ukraine and annexed the Crimea.  Putin’s plan to reinvigorate and strengthen Russia’s armed forces would be in shambles for lack of funding.

The United States would still be a member of the Trans Pacific Trade Agreement with at least 10 other nations bordering the Pacific Ocean.  It which would have been one of the largest trading blocks in the world and would have served its purpose of reducing the signatories’ dependence on Chinese trade and strengthening the ties of the other member nations to the United States. By now several other countries bordering the Pacific would have joined and China would still be on the outside looking in.

We would not have engaged in a very costly tariff war with China which produced no tangible results for our country while raising prices for American consumers, bankrupting our farmers, reducing our GDP, and striking fear into our financial markets. Instead we could have united with the European Union and our other economic allies to put pressure on China to change its trade policies instead of threatening Europe with tariffs as well.

The various departments of the executive branch of the US government and the US Postal Service would still be working for the Americans people instead of being run by leaders selected specifically to disrupt their organizations and sabotage their missions.

Advisors to the president would have been chosen for their skills and subject matter expertise instead of their willingness to always tell the president what he wants to hear.

We may not always agree with our president, but we could be reasonably assured that that he/she was putting the best interests of the nation and its people above his/her narcissistic political self-interests and that he/she was not using his/her office for personal enrichment.

We would not have had to endure the multitude of lies flowing from the White House on a daily basis for the last four years.

We would still have the capacity to be surprised and angry when we learn of a single scandalous event or disclosure instead of being turned numb because we have learned of such scandalous events and disclosures on such a regular basis.

We would not have experienced and continue to experience attack after attack on our democracy by a would be dictator who constantly bulldozes past the limits of his presidential powers daring anyone to stop him.

Our president would be leading our efforts to ensure that other countries are not able to interfere with our elections instead of inviting them in with a wink and nod.

We would have followed the science and would have the COVID-19 pandemic under control by now. We could be safely reopening our economy and perhaps a hundred thousand Americans or more would not have died.

We would not be the laughing stock of the planet and have to endure the pity of the rest of the wealthy countries of the world for being the only one of their number to still be unable to control the pandemic while they proceed to safely reopen their economies using science instead of politics as their guide.

We would not wonder on daily basis how this country could have possibly elected such a selfish, uninformed, bigoted, incompetent, narcissistic sociopath to the highest office in the land. We would not now be worried about whether we have the capacity to make that same mistake again.
