A Rational Response to a TV Commercial Asking for Money to Defend Trump

Last night I saw a commercial by the “Trump Defense PAC” supposedly chaired by none other than Herman Cain. (It was on CNN, but it may have been inserted locally by my Satellite TV provider.)  The commercial implored Trump supporters to make contributions to defend Trump against the “Mueller Witch Hunt“, and it gave a telephone number to call. I called the number and got through right away (which is a good thing). I spent some time with a girl who was obviously very new on the job, simply to waste her time so she couldn’t take contributions from real Trump supporters.

That first time I called I was asked if I wanted to contribute $100, $200, or more. I in turn asked if I could contribute 25 cents. After checking she said no, she couldn’t do that, but she could charge a dollar to my credit card.  Okay then, can I contribute $1.25? No, it has be in whole dollar increments.  Are they paying you enough to do this?  Not really. We went on like this for for awhile with me asking inane questions like, how may of you are taking calls tonight. Three.  Etc. etc.

The second time I called I asked what is the maximum amount of money I can contribute.  That got the girl who answered all excited and flustered.  She said I don’t know, but she would check. After several minutes she came back to the phone and said that I could contributed whatever would fit on my credit card. Oh, that won’t work, I said, my credit card is over drawn. Can I contribute by cash or check?  She went off to check, but I no longer on the line when she got back

The number is 800 600-3165, but I called several times a few minutes ago and got a busy signal. That probably means they are only taking calls after they run one of those commercials; otherwise I would have heard music on hold with frequent request not to hang up. However, I have seen this kind of advertisement on TV several times over the last couple of months, so it is likely that you will also see them in your area going forward.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if every time that this type of commercial appeared anywhere in the United State, the people answering calls were over run by calls from people not the least bit interested in contributing? I’m sure you folks can think of many novel ways of wasting their time.

Not that I would ever suggest such a thing of course.
