Despite the fact that so many people around the country found her account of her sexual assault extremely credible, many Republican surrogates on the cable news channels have adopted the stance that they believe that Dr. Ford was assaulted, but they don’t believe that Judge Brett Kavanaugh was her attacker. That approach is totally disingenuous and points to the depths Republicans will sink to get Kavanaugh confirmed.
Like many sexual assault survivors when they try to recall their horrific experiences many years later, Dr. Ford does not recall some details and others are fuzzy, but the memory of the attack itself are indelibly branded in her brain. She related with great certainty under oath the details of the assault, the identity of both of her assailants, and their individual roles in the attack. Those assailants were Brent Kavanaugh and Mark Judge and she identified Brent Kavanaugh her primary attacker with !00% certainty.
You cannot possibly believe Dr. Ford’s account that she suffered a sexual assault and then pretend to believe you don’t believe her when she told us who did it. You can’t have it both ways. You can say that you believe that Dr. Ford’s account was entirely credible, or you can that say that you believe that it was not credible at all, but it is totally illogical to maintain that she was very sincere when she related the details of the attack but was lying when she identified the attackers. That makes absolutely no sense, and it bothers me to no end that TV hosts are not consistently challenging that nonsense when it spewed on the airways.
While those people that Dr. Ford has identified as being among those who were present at house where the attack occurred are not backing up her claim (two were not involved and have no reason to remember the incident and the other two were the assailants), Dr. Fords claims are not without substantiation.
Three of her friends have come forward and are prepared to testify that Christine told them years before the confirmation process began that she has been attacked when she was a young teenager by a boy who was then a Federal Judge. She also told her husband about the incident before they were married in 2008 and there are records of joint counseling sessions which took place several years ago where she conveyed the details of the attack to her psychologist. Her husband has also revealed that during those sessions she identified her primary assailant as Brett Kavanaugh.
So, while it is abundantly clear that Dr. Ford is not making up the details of here horrible experience, it is also very clear that she is not suddenly lying by fingering Kavanaugh as her attacker at the last minute out of political expediency. Especially when compared to Kavanaugh’s combative and evasive testimony, it impossible to parse Dr. Ford’s narrative and come away with an honest understanding that she is to be believed, but only to a point. On the other hand, it is not inconceivable that the assault may well taken place exactly as Dr. Ford described it and Kavanaugh was too drunk to remember it.
The only conclusion that I can come to is that the Republican mouth pieces who are making these claims, and most of them are women, are either being dishonest with us and/or themselves in order to support Kavanaugh’s confirmation while not directly attacking a very sympathetic and believable victim. While they pretend to respect and support Dr. Ford, they are using that pretense to cover their purely political motives.
