A Semi-civil Conversation With a Trump Supporter About Vaccines

I was recently on a Facebook page that encourages debates between pro-Trump and anti-Trump participants. Usually the conversations are far from being polite debates; there’s a lot of name-calling and insults thrown around and a lot of one upmanship by both sides. I am really not into that. Strangely enough I started talking back-and-forth with a guy about vaccines in what was surprisingly a civil manner. However, he floored me when he declared that “science has proven that we don’t need the vaccines” (that have been developed to combat Covid) and that any mandating of vaccines violated his constitutional rights. The following was my reply:

I am really honestly amazed at your belief system. Where did you get the idea that the SCIENCE says that people DON’T need vaccinated? Except perhaps a few quacks, doctors and medical experts around the world agree that vaccinations and the Isolation and better treatment of the infected is the only way we can keep millions more from dying from this disease.

How in the heck is promoting, and even mandating Covid vaccines any different from mandating vaccines for children? I see that you were raised in the state of Virginia which by law requires children to be vaccinated for hepatitis, diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and several other diseases at appropriate ages. It is very likely that you received many, if not all of these vaccines. What makes the vaccine for Covid different in your mind?

From the American Bar Association website: “While there is a lot of sound and fury these days about mandatory vaccination against the COVID-19 virus, it should ultimately signify nothing. Mandatory vaccination is 100 percent constitutional and has been for over a century. In Bruesewitz v. Wyeth Justice Antonin Scalia stated that “the elimination of communicable diseases through vaccination became one of the greatest achievements of public health in the 20th century.” Justice Breyer, concurring, agreed. “[R]outine vaccination is one of the most spectacularly effective public health initiatives this country has ever undertaken.” In this latest case before the Supreme Court, in a 6-2 opinion by Justice Scalia, Bruesewitz effectively eliminated product liability litigation involving vaccines.

Based on your Facebook profile I also see that you have at least some college education, maybe a college degree, unlike many of yahoos who take pride in being unvaccinated for Covid. How does an educated man manage to remain so stubbornly ignorant?

I see from your Facebook picture, if it isn’t and old one, that you are fairly young. You will probably deny it, but I bet your thought process worked something like this: I’m young enough that if I get Covid I will only have a mild case, so I don’t need to be vaccinated. Therefore I can resist “government interference in my life”.

I hope that you don’t get the virus, not for your sake, but out of concern for the people around you. 10% of the population have conditions that make them immune compromised meaning that even if they are fully vaccinated they can still get a severe infection, be hospitalized, and even die. I don’t want you, or someone you might infect, passing on the virus to one of those people. I hope you don’t give the virus to a vunerable person you care about, because if the worst happens that will be something you will have to live with for the rest of your life.

His reply: SCIENCE says that those who have had Covid, gain Little or NO benefit from the Vaccine… Yet this Part of the SCIENCE is Being IGNORED…the Loons on the Left only want to tal about the Science that Supports their Position….NOT EVERYONE need s Vaccine..and THATS A FACT… there are other groups that Dont need to be VAXXED… but thats not what democrats say

My reply: WRONG! Give me the source of your fake science. You are either making this stuff up or you have been fed so much bullsh*t you couldn’t identify the truth if it not you on the butt.

His rely: I am Vaccinated, Naturally Vaccinated… not artificially Vaccinated so I am Far less likely to get covid than someone who has had only the Vaccine…. but thank you for your concern… albeit misguided.

My reply: WRONG AGAIN! We were hoping that Covid would be like the measles, where once you’ve had the disease you will almost surely never have it again, but apparently being infected and recovering from Covid doesn’t provide near as much natural immunity as we would like. From the John Hopkins Hospital website: “A study published Nov. 10, 2021 found that the chances of adults testing positive for COVID-19 were 5.49 times higher in unvaccinated people who had COVID-19 in the past than they were for those who had been vaccinated for COVID and had not had an infection before.” And that study was done before the much more contagious Omicron virus came on the scene which is infecting many previously infected people. This is just one of many studies that provided similar results. I can give you links to many other reliable sources. However if you can use Google, you can find them yourself. I AM AGAIN ASTOUNDED BY YOUR IGNORANCE!

To be continued . . .

  1. I feel Biden and the Dems are a failure because they have no effective policy to protect America from Godzllla and Ghidorah.

We all need to have a serious conversation about this.

Well, at least we should, right after the “serious conversation” with a maga anti-vaxxer.

    First things first.

  2. What you claim was a civil discussion seemed far more like a one sided , tone deaf, and dishonest person posting fantasy to your facts.
I doubt one can discuss or have any meaningful dialogue with those who believe nonsense as scientific fact. I did not that, despite your requests that person never posted any link to “substantiate” his claims.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all in favor of civility and the free exchange of opinion. But there is a line that is always crossed by these Trumpster loving, science hating folks.
