An Open Email to Senator Kyrsten Sinema

Today I sent the following text in an email to Krysten Sinema via her official website:

The fact that you apparently put more stock in a arcane Senate procedure which was most famously used to try to prevent civil rights legislation back in the 1960’s than the safeguarding our democracy by assuring that every qualified American has an opportunity to vote is exceedingly troublesome.

Moreover, your reluctance to put aside the Senate filibuster rule in order to pass voting rights legislation was bad enough,  However making a definitive statement of opposition on the floor of the Senate right before President Biden was scheduled to meet with Senate Democrats on the issue was the last straw for me .

Joe Manchin may be the only Democrats capable of being elected to statewide office in West Virginia, but you don’t have that luxury in Arizona.

Unless you change your stance on this issue, I vow here now to support one of your opponents financially in your 2024 Democratic primary, and I can assure you that I have the means to do so in a meaningful way.  In addition, I have a rather large presence on social media and I will do my best to persuade my Democratic friends to do the same.

Frankly that shouldn’t be a difficult task.  The sentiment of my 3,500+ Facebook friends is currently running strongly against you and Manchin as of late for obvious reasons.  Many of those Democrats also have huge social media footprints so it shouldn’t be difficult to organize a nationwide effort to oppose your ability to resent the Democratic Party in Arizona’s 2024 senatorial election and to contribute to your primary opponent.

Your popularity among Arizona Democrats is waning.  A recent poll by the Phoenix-based OH Predictive Insights found that 72% of Arizona Democratic voters want a Democrat other than you as their U.S. Senator.  No amount of donations from special interests to your campaign fund is going to help you overcome those odds.

You are acting as if you plan to retire from the Senate after your current term.  Whether or not that is the case, if you continue down your current course, I plan to try to insure that is your fate regardless unless you quickly revise your thinking.  And I can assure there are many other Democrats across this nation who will have similar intentions.

  1. Too little, to late.

I am sad to say, this article from Truthout nails the situation:

“The broader blame for the predicament the Democrats find themselves in falls on the shoulders of the faction of the party that Biden and Schumer belong to — the same faction as Manchin and Sinema. Decades of divestment from pro-labor policies in favor of neoliberal Clintonian triangulation has resulted in a party at odds with itself. The party is uninterested in, and incapable of, pursuing long-term strategies that require building a bench of progressive candidates and elected officials. Instead, the party’s organs function as an incumbent reelection racket and a jobs guarantee program for wealthy consultants whose only function is to punch to the left.

There’s no reason that the Democrats couldn’t field, support and elect a working-class candidate in West Virginia or Arizona, if that had been a multiyear priority. Rather than spending time and money training and cultivating teachers, working-class activists and union organizers, the Democratic Party has treated those types of candidates as hostile enemies to be vanquished. Instead, they prioritize prosecutors and veterans of a particular, centrist ideological bent. As a result, there will always be a Joe Manchin or a Kyrsten Sinema — or a Joe Lieberman — willing to tank the party’s entire agenda.

The irony is that after spending his career as a conservative Democrat, Biden’s agenda is being thwarted by his own supposed allies. He ran as a creature of the Senate, who could force Republicans to support some of his most ambitious plans due to his decades in elected office. Now, he can’t even whip support from his own party. If the Democrats hadn’t spent decades doing everything possible to disempower the left and the party’s activist base, Biden might actually be able to advance his legislation. Unfortunately for the millions of people in the United States who stand to benefit from Biden’s stalled plans, that has never been a priority for the modern Democratic Party.”

  2. I believe attempting to reason with either Sinema or Manchin a waste of time. I suspect she is receiving funding from right wing sources that counteract your threat of economic hardship.
The Democratic Party must counter both these two republicans in democratic clothing as well as the ongoing coup from the Republican Party in the same fashion; strip them both of their committee assignments, stand up publicly and constantly to educate the public on the evil and illegal machinations of the GOP as well.
