Despising and Needing the Man at the Same Time

Jeff Sessions continues to be a continuing dilemma for me. He is walking talking example of everything I hate in a politician, yet for selfish reasons I want him to keep his job as Attorney General of the United States.  These conflicting emotions have recently become more intense when Sessions instituted a new policy of charging every undocumented immigrant, including those seeing asylum, with a crime which mandates that they be separated from their children. How evil can one man be to publicly admit he did this as a “deterrent” and then using the bible to justify his actions.  I guess he is not familiar with the New Testament.

Here in the state of Alabama, we have a lot of experience with Sessions.  As a US Senator he has been one of our most conservative politicians, and in this state that really saying something.  Name any conservative cause – state’s rights, abortion, right to guns, hating pot, decreasing the social safety net – Sessions has been the standard bearer.  When Trump appointed him Attorney General my heart sank.

Yet Sessions did the right thing and recused himself from supervising the Russian investigation, earning Trump’s unrelenting anger. That action plus Trump’s stupidity in firing Comey resulted in the appointment of a Special Council and the very real possibility that an independent investigation will reveal in truth about the attempt to subvert our democracy despite the numerous attempts by Trump and House Republicans to sweep the entire matter under the rug.

Only Session’s resolve to reshape the judicial landscape in this country in accordance his ultra conservative vision allows him to endure Trump’s unrelenting insults which obviously are aimed at getting him to resign. Which is worse, the damage that Sessions is doing to our country and its image around the world or allowing Trump to appoint another AG who is willing to do his bidding with regard to the Russian investigation?

It’s not like we have a choice in the matter, but right now I will error on the side of letting Session remain in place for the time being.  This country has recovered from disasters before and eventually we will recover from the damage that both Trump and Sessions are inflicting on a daily basis. On the other hand it is absolutely essential that we get to the bottom of this attack on democracy so that we can insure that it never happens again. We also need to expose any complicity of Trump and his minions so that American electorate is informed to never again elect another demigod to the highest office in this land.
