Is 23 Enough?

At last count (I haven’t checked today) there are twenty-three politicians in the running for the Democratic nomination for president. That’s got to be some kind of record, but while we are on a roll, why stop there?  Let’s set a record that can never topped.  At a bare minimum we need to make it an even two dozen.

Surely there are some Democratic governors who are well known in their home states, if nowhere else, who haven’t yet thrown their hats in the ring.  Heck, there are plenty of potential candidates out there who could join in the fun. You don’t even have to be a Democrat and age is no handicap this time around.

Any Senator, no matter how obscure, is invited, but no longer does one have to be a Senator, former Senator, or equivalent to run for president.  Having failed to unseat a high profile Republican up for reelection or being a mayor of any small to medium sized city is apparently qualification enough. That really opens up the field.  Apparently you doesn’t even have to be popular in your current elected office to announce that you are seeking the highest office in the land.

If politicians who are virtually unknown outside of their own states can do it, why not encourage high profile freshman Representatives to join the fray.  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar apparently like the limelight and they would certainly “spice up” any televised debate.

If you are a billionaire who got a lot of publicity when you announce a possible run for president as an independent, but soon disappeared again into obscurity, why not reinvigorate your campaign by declaring as a Democrat.   Trump has demonstrated that any billionaire (or anyone who can con others into believing that he is a billionaire) can become president.  That opens up the field to  several other real billionaires out there who could run as Democrats.

But why limit ourselves?  The only qualifications for President of the United States as spelled out in Article II of the Constitution are being “a natural born citizen”, having “attained the age of thirty five years”, and “been fourteen years a resident within the United States”.  I qualify and I’m sure that many who are readings this do as well.  Let’s all run; the more the merrier.  Surely they can find a debate stage large enough to stuff us all on.
